I’ve been interested in this bag for a while—I was interested in the two layer design—and finally got my hands on one. This is the A-Range Bag by Vertx. It’s a high quality bag. The shoulder straps, the YKK zippers, the canvas itself; overall a great bag. But there are some things I don’t like about it.
Let’s talk about what I do like first. I do like the quality of the materials. Very nice comfortable straps and handles. I can’t complain on the stitching, the zippers, or the buckels.
When you open the side, you have two zippered mesh compartments at the top. Below that there are two pull-out “drawers.” They are great for holding ammo, magazines, etc. on the way to the range. There’s a nice ridged panel between the upper compartment and these pull-out drawers that keep the bag from collapsing on itself when you take the drawers out.
The unique thing about these drawers is they have a velcro bag inside. The bag has a mesh bottom and a drawstring top. Very handy for shaking dirt out of your empty brass.
On the back of the bag there is a small compartment I’ve been using for targets, but it does have velcro loop lining so you could add velcroed accessories there.
The main part of the bag, the top part, has a typical double zippered open flap. Once you’re inside there are two pockets on the one side and velcro hook on the other.
There is also a metal bar that loops under the bag. It’s almost like a carrying bar. It has loops on either side allowing you to use it for carrying the bag, or more likely to secure the bag to something. You can see this metal loop in the pictures above and below.
Now for the things I don’t like. There’s not a lot of room in this bag. At least there’s not a lot of room when you think of like a more traditional bag. The “shelving” areas in the bottom make the top very shallow. This is a bag for people who like to have distinct areas of a bag. If you like to dump gear in the top of your bag and get going, you will probably get very frustrate very fast with the A-Range.
The biggest annoyance is the shoulder strap clips. On the top of the bag there are four nylon loops where you can attach the shoulder straps. They overhang the zipper and it catches on these loops every time I unzip the bag. Some people say it doesn’t bother them, but it sure does annoy me.
The product quality is great, but it is a little pricy. If you’re interested and have the chance to get your hands on one at the range—someone else’s bag—have a look at it, see if you can borrow it for a few days before you place your order.
When you are ready to purchase your own, you’ll probably want to get it on Amazon. Vertx customer support is hit or miss.
